This exhilarating program features music inspired by dance traditions from across the world, ranging from elegant European ballrooms to fiery Spanish festivities. The program includes:
  • Johannes Brahms | Hungarian Dance No. 5 – One of classical music’s most recognizable dances, filled with lively rhythms and folk--inspired melodies.
  • Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov | Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34 – A dazzling showpiece bursting with Spanish flair and virtuosic orchestral color.
  • Alexander Borodin | Prince Igor: Polovtsian Dances – Sweeping melodies and exotic harmonies transport listeners to the world of Russian legend.
  • Johann Strauss | Emperor Waltz – The quintessential Viennese waltz, brimming with elegance and charm.
  • Arturo Márquez | Danzón No. 2 – A modern Mexican classic infused with captivating rhythms and vibrant energy.
“This concert is all about movement – the way music can make you feel like you’re dancing even while sitting still,” said Tim Wiggins, LCO’s Music Director and Conductor. “Each piece tells its own story through rhythm and melody, and together they remind us that dance is one of the most joyful ways people connect through music.”
This performance is free and open to the public, with donations gratefully accepted to support the orchestra’s mission of bringing accessible, high-quality classical music to Central Kentucky.

These concerts showcase a mix of classical and contemporary works performed by the volunteer musicians of the LCO at two local venues.

Sunday, April 13, 2025 | 2:30 PM | Lexington Public Library Central Library
LCO partners with the Lexington Public Library’s Classical Music Sundays series for an intimate afternoon of chamber music at the Lexington Public Library, Central Library. Works on this program explore the vibrant musical colors and textures of different instruments of the orchestra:

  • Mozart’s Wind Serenade in C Minor, showcasing the elegance of wind instruments.
  • Stravinsky’s Suite No. 1, a lively and playful collection of short movements brimming with character, performed by a small chamber orchestra.
  • Holst’s St. Paul Suite, a beloved string orchestra work that blends English folk tunes with bold harmonies and high energy.

The full orchestra takes the stage on the unofficial Star Wars holiday, “May the Fourth,” with a program blending cinematic and classical pastoral imagery:

  • Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral), a radiant depiction of nature’s beauty and tranquility.
  • Mozart’s Oboe Concerto, a showcase of lyrical grace and virtuosic brilliance. Featured musician Dr. Diego Espinoza Masías is in his second year as an LCO member.
  • Star Wars Epic Suite 1 & 2, an exhilarating arrangement of John Williams’ legendary film scores, adapted by Robert W. Smith.
  • Holst’s St. Paul Suite, an encore performance from the April concert.

“We are excited to present these selections, which blend timeless classical masterpieces with iconic cinematic music,” said the LCO’s Music Director, Tim Wiggins. “These concerts will transport audiences through diverse landscapes of sound, from the intimate charm of chamber music to the grandeur of full orchestral works.”

"Classical Music Sundays is music on Main Street both literally and figuratively,” said Doug Tattershall of the Lexington Public Library. “It's great classical music for everybody, and the price is right: free!"

LEXINGTON, KY (March 18, 2024) — The Lexington Community Orchestra (LCO) will present their 2023-24 season finale concert at 3:00pm on Sunday, April 28 at Bryan Station High School.

This “Celebration of Sibelius'' program includes music exclusively by late-romantic, early modern era composer Jean Sibelius. Perhaps best known worldwide for his tone poem Finlandia, Sibelius is widely regarded as the greatest composer from Finland and credited with strengthening the nation’s identity in the late 19th century. In addition to Finlandia, the orchestra will perform his Symphony No. 1 in E minor.

This performance features Dr. Sila Darville, assistant professor of violin and viola at Eastern Kentucky University, as soloist for Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor. Dr. Darville holds degrees from Istanbul Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory, University of Minnesota and Texas Tech University. She has performed with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Paducah Symphony Orchestra and Louisville Orchestra. This is her first appearance with the Lexington Community Orchestra.

The program, entitled “Passions,” includes music from the late-Romantic period of classical music: Jean Sibelius’s Karelia Overture, Maurice Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (also called “Pathetique” or “The Passionate Symphony.”) The woodwind and brass musicians will be featured in a performance of Paul Dukas’s Fanfare pour La Peri.
This is the first time the group will be performing at Frederick Douglass High School auditorium.

LCO presents a “Spooky” Symphonic Experience
Sponsored by Eastern Kentucky University
Free and open to the public at Bryan Station High School
LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 5, 2023) — The Lexington Community Orchestra (LCO) presents a celebration of spooky classical music at 3:00pm Sunday, Oct. 29 at Bryan Station High School. This family-friendly event is a great introduction to orchestral music for children, or a fun reminder of Halloween favorites for the young at heart.
The concert program includes recognizable favorites from classic stories like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Peter and the Wolf. The orchestra will also perform creepier classics In the Hall of the Mountain King, Night on Bald Mountain, and Danse Macabre. Costumes are encouraged, and children will have the opportunity to march around the auditorium to show off their costume and get an up-close look at the musicians performing. Treat bags will be available at the end of the concert for children up to age 18.

(Lexington, KY) November 12, 2018 – Dr. Timothy Wiggins, Assistant Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Bands at Eastern Kentucky University, has been named as the new Music Director of the Lexington Community Orchestra (LCO). The announcement was made by the Lexington Community Orchestra Board of Directors. Dr. Wiggins has assumed the title of Music Director in time for the upcoming 2018-19 Season.

Wiggins has been well-received by the musicians of LCO. Board member and principal cellist Nancy McKenney highlights his experience and rapport with the members of the orchestra, stating that, "LCO is fortunate to have a director who is not only a very talented musician, but highly personable as well."

Dr. Wiggins succeeds Jeremy Mulholland, who led the Lexington Community Orchestra for ten years.

Dr. Timothy Wiggins
Dr. Wiggins is an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Bands at Eastern Kentucky University. He holds a PhD in Music Education from Florida State University, a MM in Wind Conducting from the University of Memphis, and BM in Orchestral Bassoon Performance and Instrumental Music Education from Arizona State University. With an impressive history of teaching and conducting musicians of all levels, as well as his accomplishments as a professional musician, his talents will be a great asset to Lexington Community Orchestra.

Dr. Wiggins expressed his enthusiasm about this new position. “I am honored to be working with such a talented group of musicians from the greater Lexington area. I have always advocated that great music comes from within all walks of life, and I am thrilled to be a part of this experience for these musicians and the supporters of this fantastic organization.”

Dr. Wiggins will conduct LCO’s first concert this season on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 3pm at Bryan Station High School. The Beethoven program will include:

Egmont Overture, Op. 84
Rondino for 8 winds, WoO 25
Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
